I just completed a custom cart interface for a client that uses customized fonts. I guess I'm a bit slow here but I suddenly found out how easy it is to embed custom fonts into a web site!
There's a good article on the current state of embedding fonts over at A List Apart.
Better yet, in this article there are some great resources for finding free to use, open source fonts for your site, and even online tools to package the style sheets.
Are you looking for a good web professional - a designer/developer or consultant?** Had a bad experience with a web professional lately? Every one of my new clients these days have at least a couple of horror stories. There was the $4,000 sent to the Indian company that stopped working on the project and still keeps asking for money. AND they are trying to steal his idea. No kidding. Then another client of mine who spent $75,000, out of their personal expenses, for a site that probably was only worth $3,000, and never got done.
I love good user interface design. So I'm lovin' jQuery and what it can do.
I brand myself as a left brain/right brain person (a trained photographer who builds web sites) and I've spent most of my career building bridges between what I call 'engineer minded folks' and the rest of us 'mere humans'. I'm really thankful for Apple for showing the world that good UI works and works best.
I'm doing a little research of online web site auction software that can be set up and customized, at least a little bit, for a client. Some brief Googling has not shown me many not-for-profit based comparisons. So here's a little table comparing various softwares I came up with in my search.
I've broken the list down by commercial and open source. Except for that, there is no real order to the chart.
NOTE: Prices are rounded up as I'm too lazy to keep typing .99... :)
This is an updated this custom Dreamhost PHP Install it to include the latest stuff, including PHP 5.3.2. I use a variation of this for all my Drupal installs because Drupal requires a few more MB of PHP memory (I like 128MB) that Dreamhost gives your PHP, by default.
I've been using screen sharing to help guide my parents into the digital age. It is wonderful to be able to virtually look over their shoulders and show them how they can use their email, etc. I was using LogMeIn to help them, but now their home network has grown to include a small backup server, a Vonage router, and wireless networking I wanted better access to, occasionally give these devices a virtual kick in the pants. So I set up a VPN server.
Leopard's new Spaces does wonders for my work - allowing me to have less clutter in the background as I multi-task through my day. It's really nice but it breaks. There are a number of bugs and the one I'm going to suggest fixes for is when Spaces seems to stop responding to attempts to switch spaces using the Dock.
