Streamlining New Electrical/Gas Service Setup

The existing method to secure electrical and gas services for construction sites from Nevada Energy was woefully antiquated. Clients were burdened with the necessity of numerous visits to NVEnergy offices, filling out obsolete PDF forms, and either faxing or physically delivering them. This was followed by the tedious task of making follow-up calls to monitor the status of their applications. The complexity of NVEnergy’s system, with its diverse procedures for different types of construction, posed a significant challenge for customers to navigate.

My Role

As the lead UX designer, I took charge of collaborating with key stakeholders in NVE leadership. I meticulously crafted Figma screens and InVision prototypes, continuously refining them to cater to the unique needs of eight distinct personas. I then collaborated with the EY team to oversee the development of the React.js and React.native apps. Additionally, I spearheaded the user testing process, capturing valuable feedback and incorporating improvements into the Figma mockups.

Scope and Constraints

The project’s scope encompassed the creation of a comprehensive style library, the development of mockups and prototypes, and the implementation of a streamlined, wizard-based initiation process. The goal was to provide clients with time-saving features, transparent project scheduling, and real-time tracking capabilities through six intuitive dashboards. The project had to work within the existing React.js, Node.js, and TypeScript technology stack while reconfiguring Nevada Energy’s internal processes to align with the modernized approach.

Process and What I Did

  • Collaborated extensively with Nevada Energy’s leadership and management to gain a deep understanding of the project’s requirements and objectives.
  • Designed a visually captivating style library using Figma and InVision, incorporating cutting-edge Material-UI (MUI) components.
  • Developed a robust prototype that served as a guiding light throughout the development process, boasting six dynamic dashboards and over 1200 screens for web and mobile applications.
  • Implemented an intuitive wizard-based initiation process, streamlining Nevada Energy’s cumbersome procedures and enhancing overall customer satisfaction.
  • Successfully managed the end-to-end project life cycle, ensuring punctual delivery and an exceptional, high-quality outcome.

Outcomes and Lessons

The Nevada Energy New Construction Portal revolutionized the way contractors and homeowners navigate the process of setting up power and gas services. By providing a seamless customer experience, we achieved our goal of simplifying the journey. The final mockups featured a comprehensive construction initiation process wizard, custom-tailored to eight distinct personas. Additionally, we created six personalized dashboards, effectively guiding users through the five crucial phases of obtaining service. This project underscored the significance of effective collaboration, user-centric design, and top-notch project management skills.
